Amanda's night unfolded as planned. The Top Five came over for a quick meeting, but both Omar and Kairo were noticeably absent. After they left she fed Damian his dinner—steak with sliced peppers and mashed potatoes, along with a tall glass of soda mixed with a few doses of cough syrup. He noticed something was off with it immediately, but she convinced him the peppers in his meal probably left his mouth feeling funny and encouraged him to finish the drink.

The plan worked. Thirty minutes after his meal he complained of being tired and barely made it upstairs before passing out. She waited an extra hour, just to be sure he was in a deep sleep, then called a cab and gave them directions to meet her at the head of the main road. Afterward she quickly grabbed an overnight bag and packed for her escape, along with all the money Damian had in his wallet. Two hundred and thirty eight dollars. The amount angered her initially, but she figured the extra she didn't know he had was simply God's way of providing for her, so she gave Him thanks and carefully tiptoed out of the house with JJ asleep in her arms.

Her heart raced as she made her way through the night. The anticipation of the freedom she longed for pumped through her veins. She could taste the sweetness of independence. Every step away from the house brought more hope for what the future held for her and her child. She didn't have any professional skills, but she knew how to do housework. Surely someone could use a maid, or even a part-time babysitter. She could possibly go back to school and get her GED. The possibilities were endless now that she was away from Damian. Of course, she had to rid herself of his last name. Going by Brinkley, or Preston for that matter, would make it easy for The Allegiance to find her. She'd have to come up with another name entirely, and she needed to come up with it fast. Her new life was just a bus ride away.

She was sweaty by the time she made it to the end of the road. The weight of the bags was more than she’d anticipated. Perhaps she was still weak from the horrific abuse and neglect Damian put her through. Her appetite was still nonexistent. The only thing she'd eaten all day was a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. JJ was bigger now, too. He felt twenty pounds heavier in her arms. She had to take a seat to regain her strength. If only she'd thought to bring water with her. But there was no need to worry. The taxi was on its way.

"What the f*** do you think you're doing?"

A bright light shined in her face and blinded her. Before she could move she was yanked up off the ground by the back of her shirt. She screamed in fear as she dangled in the air and held JJ tightly as they were tossed a few feet away.
